The Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS) located in Montgomery, AL and Tuskegee, AL is seeking a full-time Staff Ophthalmologist.

This position is assigned to the Surgical Service, under the supervision of Chief, Surgical Service. The selected Ophthalmologist is primarily responsible for providing Ophthalmology care to veterans both clinically and surgically.

The Staff Ophthalmologist will be expected to determine the need for surgical or non-surgical treatment of urgent or emergent ophthalmology consultations during on-call hours; supervise the general Ophthalmology and Optometry out-patient clinics.

Physician will perform minor and major ophthalmic surgical procedures per routine credentialing and privileging approvals; examine and treats patients with simple or complex ophthalmology complaints; complete preoperative evaluations and informed consent for patients scheduled for surgery in the ambulatory or main operating rooms; ensure appropriate post-operative care and follow-up is conducted on patients.

Physician ensures VA directives and policies are in place and followed; assist in reducing the surgical and electronic wait lists for the facility (and regional network as appropriate); assist in administrative duties, as assigned; and assist in other needs of the facility as requested and commensurate with training and skills. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified - Required.

Highly Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certified.

Board certified/board eligible in Opthalmology

Residency – Completion of a fully accredited US residency program in Ophthalmology, with or without additional fellowship training Teaching and supervision experience of Medical Student/Residents.

Glaucoma fellowship trained or proficiency in glaucoma surgeries to include trabeculectomy, canaloplasty and tube shunt procedures preferred.

Excellent surgical skills are required for primarily cataract surgery and laser surgery. Specialty interest in other surgical procedures is encouraged but not required.

Salary Range: Up to $300,000 per year

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

U.S. Citizenship (Non-citizens may be appointed only if it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens)

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Approved schools are:(1)Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted. (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. (3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Must be proficient in spoken and written English
