The Central Alabama Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHCS) located in Montgomery, AL is searching for a BE/BC Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine Physician to serve as Medical Officer of the Day.

The MOD is responsible for the care of patients in Acute Care and Specialties Service Line, Emergency Department at the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS). Must be proficient in emergency situations, experienced in operation and administration of the Emergency Department and committed to public service.

Duties include, but not limited to:

Patient assessment and treatment/management of urgent/emergent conditions, acute conditions, exacerbation of chronic conditions

Vesting of new veterans, admission and/or transfer of urgent/emergent veterans

Providing medical clearance for veterans requiring admission to in-patient Mental Health, and for providing medical care to CAVHCS staff who become sick or who are injured while on duty in the absence of the Occupational Health Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner.

The Medical Officer of the Day reports during non-administrative duty hours, i.e. prior to 8 a.m., and after 4:30 p.m.

Board certified or board eligible in Family, Internal or Emergency Medicine required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.


Salary Range: Up to $240,000 per year

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

a. Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens).

b. Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.

(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

(3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

c. Licensure and Registration:? Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

d. Physical Standards: A pre-placement physical examination shall be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness for candidates for appointment in VA. Terminal physical examinations of applicants separated from the U.S. Armed Forces within 90 days of appointment may be substituted for a pre-employment physical exam.

e. English Language Proficiency: Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required.
